Where the hell is Sasabe?

16 december 2015 - Casa Grande, Arizona, Verenigde Staten

Yesterday we went to drive throughout the desert landscapes of South Arizona. After some planning we decided to go to Sasabe, a small border town in the middle of nowhere.

We first did some groceries to get some breakfast in our stomachs and after that we went on the road towards the south. We first had to drive on the highway, but after that we landed on a small road through a landscape full of tall cacti, and some Native American reservates.

We eventually came to a road that led us to Kitt Peak, an observatory place on top of a huge mountain. When we went in there we could see the whole desert, and to my surprise there was snow on top of the mountain! It was awesome, we were able to see kilometres far! After some enjoyment of the view we went back to the main road to see if we could find Sasabe!

After a long road with many "dips" (little ups and downs in the road, like a rollercoaster) we arrived in Sasabe. There were a few houses, and some of them were abandoned. There was an entrance to an elementary school but we never saw the school. There was also a small shop aswell. After deciding to visit the shop we came to discover that the shop is ran by a lovely trendy lady, someone you wouldn't expect to run a shop in the middle of no where! We bought some delicious home made tamales (beef and maizena pastries wrapped in corn tusk) and ate them outside. It was really weird, its a town nobody visits except for people that cross the border. After finishing our tamale we went back to drive towards the hotel again. During the drive there I wrote a game idea down based on the town! All on all we had an amazing day, with many secrets that we have discovered!

A little bit of the game design story I have written: "Sasabe is a little town in the middle of nowhere of south Arizona, on the border of Mexico. The town is abandoned, except for a couple of houses, a post office and a little shop that facilitates almost everything in small portions. There is a little shop (see images) with a nice shop keeper. She is a woman around 40 years old, she looks trendy and says she loves the area for how quiet it is. She is the fourth generation that runs this shop. She says that she loves that nobody but her and people that cross the border come to visit the shop. She knows everyone who gets there, except for you! Because you are a tourist that is on a road trip along the States. You are very interested in little towns like this, and the drive to Sasabe was over 40 miles from the nearest place, Three Point. It is getting afternoon and the sun starts to go down once you arrive. Out of curiosity you enter the shop, and you discover that there are hats, canned soup and other necessary items are available. You went in to buy an ice cream, but eventually got told that the lovely lady made some fresh handmade tamales! Hungry, you go for the tamales. While paying she tells you that it is hunting season and that the deer that are being hunted down will most of the time walk to the main road during sundown and night time. She also tells you that she shot a few herself! Still fascinated by the little town, and after making s few photos of the shop and the town, you get back in your car, back to the Three Point town. But on your way back in the dark you discover something horrible... "

Thank you all for reading! :D
