From The Mountain's Ancestors

18 december 2015 - Silver City, New Mexico, Verenigde Staten

Today we went on a trip through the Gila Wilderness. First we had a continental breakfast at the hotel, after that we went on our way to the Gila Cliff Dwellings! The Gila Dwellings are dwellings that were build into caves by the Mogollon people, around the 1280's.

Once we were arrived, after driving through the mountains and forests, we had to walk up the mountain along the little river that was flowing through the park. Upon the mountain we found a ranger, and she told us about the inhabitants of the buildings that were over there. We were constantly warned about not leaning on the walls, because they were over 700 years old. We were told that the people were very athletic, and that they were used climbing up and down the mountain. That is why they grew their crops, beans, corn and squash, down by the river or on top of the mesa's (mountains with flat tops). Why the f*ck would they live all the way up in the mountains, instead of close by the river? They didn't know unfortunately, because in the 1870's, people raided the houses and that is why nobody could find out why people lived all the way up there.

After the hike, and when we were down by the car again we went to prehistoric paintings made by the Mogollon people. They made these paintings with water and some kind of minerals. This was just a quick look, plus there was another small dwelling in a kind of lower mountain, but still far away from the river!

The road towards the dwellings was high and in pine trees forests. The road back, it was different. We went to drive a small circle, and the way back was deserted almost. On the way back we ate at Mimbres Valley Cafe, in the middle of nowhere! It's a small cafe, but the food was delicious! Mom got the home made fish and chips, and I got typical Mexican food. After finishing our lunch we went back on the road and came along a big copper mine and Fort Bayard.

Fort Bayard is a small town that was originally meant to take care of veterans who came back from war etc. It was an abandoned town, with many big houses and a big hospital, all build in a 1950's style. You could almost see the ghosts wandering around, it was creepy! There was a cemetery for veterans, and also a monument for forgotten veterans. It was a crazy place, but typically American as you might understand.

We headed towards the hotel after that, and just chilled in the room until we went to sleep. We played a small game of Biggen, a game Klienemême gave us! It was an interesting day, and tomorrow we are heading towards Carlsbad!

Gaan jullie naar de Carlsbad Caverns National Park? Naar de grotten? Wat is er nog meer te doen?
